South African band Seether’s heavy melodic rock sound makes for novel yet slightly dull listening. Their latest album ‘One Cold Night’ is an emotionally charged record, with Shaun Morgan’s deep Pearl Jam-esque vocals complementing the strong, low strum of the acoustic guitars and crashing drums nicely . Played in this way, the heavy songs seem more intimate and fresh than the tired groan of the electric guitars heard on other heavy rock albums.

The band claim to feel more of a connection with their audience when they play their songs acoustically, allowing their fans to understand the (unfortunately incredibly clichéd) lyrics and complicated chord progressions, and in parts, this is true.

Sadly though, after a while the relentless strumming and Morgan’s nasal whine starts making every song sound exactly the same. The enthusiasm felt in tunes at the start of the record gradually fades until the album starts to feel old and lifeless, without any vigour or energy in Seether’s tracks to spark your interest.

This album comes complete with a bonus DVD of extra material, including an in-depth interview with the band guaranteed to send you to sleep within seconds of it being played, plus a cover of Pearl Jam’s ‘Immortality’, which sounds identical to the original, thanks to Morgan’s mimicked Eddie Vedder impression. ‘One Cold Night’ is an album only to be purchased by the most hardcore of heavy rock fans.
