"Its hips swing straight of the 60s, a Scott Walker-esque esoteric dance kitsch given a neat contemporary twist."
Superkings – Hit The Ground RunningThis is the pick of the bunch here by far. 'Hit The Ground Running' is a slow-burning, radio-friendly monster with some amazingly poignant lyricism, epic piano and strings combinations. The more upbeat, tumbledown 'Wolves And Ravens' is a worthy accompaniment to counterpoint the melancholia.
Pepe Deluxé – The Mischief Of Cloud 6
What a crazy, refreshing oddity of a single. Its hips swing straight of the 60s, a Scott Walker-esque esoteric dance kitsch given a neat contemporary twist.
Stephanie Dosen – This Joy
There’s no doubting Stephanie has a lovely folky voice, but she could do with a bit more edge a la Nina Nastasia or Tanya Donnelly in her pomp. At the moment, it all sounds a little too safe and comfy.
Guile – Rock 'N' Roll
Guile sound suspiciously like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. In fact, we're sure this is Black Rebel Motorcycle Club masquerading under a new name in what will ultimately be a doomed comeback.
Scissor Sisters – Kiss You Off
'Kiss You Off' is, to be fair, above average Scissor Sisters tosh. But, there again, this comparison is reached from what is already a pretty low base mark.
Asobi Seksu – Walk On The Moon
Blimey, shoegazing is back! Japan’s Asobi Seksu know all the right moves and have clearly listened to all the right stuff, but there’s something a little one dimensional about 'Walk On The Moon', and the lacklustre lead vocals let the song down somewhat.
The Heights – For Real
Punchy, spiky rock reminiscent of Kings of Leon in their more raucous moments.
Reverend And The Makers – Heavyweight Champion Of The World
Anodine, uninspired white funk rock that will no doubt be touted as the future of British guitar music and the kids will fall for it. Appalling.
LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends
The sound of a band that knows the game is up.
Insofar – Reach Out
Bland, earnest guitar rock really should be outlawed under International Law. Should it happen, this lot would be hard pushed to find a lawyer willing to argue their case.
Unklejam – What Am I Fighting For?
Bland funk that radio stations such as Magic FM will happily pump out 24/7. Rubbish, but it’ll probably end up at No.1.
The Sleeping Years – You and Me Against the World EP
The opening track brought to mind Brian Molko, which was a scary moment. However, this proved to be a slight aberration in what is a pleasant, if hardly earth-shattering, collection of fragile ditties.
Modest Mouse – Dashboard
Oh dear. Modest Mouse goes Franz Ferdinand. Is this an undisguised stab at mainstream fame and fortune? We rather fear it is.
Findlay Brown – Losing the Will to Survive
You said it, Findlay.
Gallows – Abandon Ship
Yes guys, we’ve heard Hundred Reasons and are waiting patiently for them to split up. (Hundred Reasons?! Think you need some cotton buds for those ears Ms Martin! Urgently! - Hearing Doc Ed)
