Ping Pong Bitches
Lisa Holmes
The kind of tongue-in-cheek electroclash that Har Mar Superstar peddled back in '02
"Essentially this is the perfect throwaway pop record - for this week only. Referencing the 80’s, punk and a what-the-fuck attitude, it engages your ears but not your brain. That’s mission accomplished for the ‘Bitches then."
Ping Pong Bitches sound like they’d be very popular in certain Ibiza ‘live’ shows from their name. Indeed the music contained on this LP is expelled with a sense of purpose as forceful as a ping pong ball from a certain orifice.Making the kind of tongue-in-cheek electroclash that Har Mar Superstar peddled back in ’02, PPB are camped up, dressed up ‘fun’; with lyrics like “Feel the beast in me / Come on and chain me up”.
Catchy pop nuggets abound on ‘Alpha Dog’, from the cover of Honor Blackman’s ‘Kinky Boots’ to ‘Rock Ya Body’ and the aggro-stomp of ‘Rock Action’. But it is hard to shake the feeling that they are a weird fusion of Republica and The Pipettes, with the musical tastes of the former, and the ethos and marketing angle of the latter.
There is only so far that the girls can take their ironic premise, and this record might be just in time to catch the coat tails of nu-rave and the resulting indie-dance craze but despite the fact that they released first album back in 2004, further longevity doesn’t beckon.
Essentially this is the perfect throwaway pop record - for this week only. Referencing the 80s, punk and a what-the-fuck attitude, it engages your ears but not your brain. That’s mission accomplished for the ‘Bitches then.
