Celebration of Life 2007
Friday 26th October, South Bank Centre’s
Royal Festival Hall
0871 663 2505 / www.southbankcentre.co.uk / £15, £10 / 7.30pm (prompt!)
THE UK’S FINEST BLACK MUSICIANS AND PERFORMERS COME TOGETHER AND RAISE THEIR VOICES TO THE ROOF IN A CELEBRATION OF LIFE
OMAR, NATE JAMES, YOUNG KOF, UNITED PRAISE CHOIR, ZENA EDWARDS, PAULETTE TAJAH, WAYNE CLARKE, BOY BLUE ENTERTAINMENT, LIFEFORCE BAND, CURTIS WALKER (HOST)
The Metropolitan Black Police Association’s annual anti-violence campaign – ‘Revival’ – commences at the start of Black History Month. The ‘Celebration of Life’ is an annual concert celebrating all the positive elements of Black British culture and, more than anything, the vibrant life force that exists within the community. Now in its fifth year Revival is a community initiative created by the Metropolitan Black Police Association to engage and inform the black community on issues of gun and drug related crime in our city. Revival is a response to the rising incidents of gun and drug related crime in London
To this end, the Met BPA and Serious have put together a fantastic concert headed by internationally acclaimed soul singer Omar and the brightest star to emerge more recently from the UK’s soul scene, Nate James. They top a bill that is absolutely bursting with talent, where hip-hop, gospel, jazz, reggae, spoken word and street-dance are all represented.
The evening will also see performances from lover’s rock star Paulette Tajah and spoken-word luminary Zena Edwards, one of the UK’s most refreshing new voices. New vocal talent Wayne Clarke will feature as will up-and-coming Liverpool rapper Young Kof who has been hailed by BBC 1Xtra as “the future of UK music”. Yet another highlight of the show will come from the 60-strong United Praise Choir who have become front runners on the gospel scene in just two short years. The evening will also see thrilling street dance from Boy Blue Entertainment’s hip-hop dance revolution ‘Pied Piper’ from Theatre Royal Stratford East.
The actor/comedian Curtis Walker will host the event ensuring that the show does indeed run the full gamut of Black British culture, lending it a cabaret feel in the best sense of the format – a varied evening of consistently high quality entertainment that will nevertheless allow for moments of reflection on the high cost of street violence to the community. All acts will be backed by the Lifeforce Band who have accompanied the likes of Caron Wheeler (Soul II Soul), the London Community Gospel Choir, Jazz Jamaica and many more. This show will be signed throughout in English Sign Language.
This year the Celebration of Life concert will also be commemorating the Bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act with the Passage of Music. The Passage of Music will be hosting a season of events starting on Friday 28th September, that traces the musical journey from Africa to the Caribbean and beyond, and explores how this music has shaped and enriched contemporary British culture. It encompasses the spectrum of today’s continuing connections with the music of the Black Diaspora, from grass roots, community driven events that engage and develop the composers and producers of the future, to the visionary cross artform works of our major artists who continue to push the boundaries of Black British arts.
