We Are The Physics - Are Ok At Music

by Lisa Holmes

Who are we to argue in the face of scientfic proof?

"That WATP manage to give the album such a purposeful vibe without compromising on quality bodes well for the future."

Drug Young Knives, use them in a freakish experiment and splice their limbs with those of the masked men of Devo. We Are Physics are the result of this scientific jiggery pokery; a form of controlled chaos if you like.

Explosive and off-key guitar riffs tangle with each other behind the yelps and staccato shout of the lead singer (one of three Michaels and a Chris in the band). Racing through twelve songs in just under half an hour is a feat that most hardcore punk bands would be proud of, and that WATP manage to give the album such a purposeful vibe without compromising on quality bodes well for the future.

Essentially ‘...Ok At Music’ is the missing link between The Futureheads and The Young Knives, it is where British indie should have gone two years ago instead of flirting with saps like The Twang. This is rock, new wave, Kate Bush and zombies on speed, it is four angry Glaswegians who make music to fit to.

From the suspense of ‘Bulimia Sisters’ showing off a more traditional rock sound complete with lyrics that are almost impossible to decipher apart from catching the odd word and sheepish apology. ‘You Can Do Athletics, BTW’, apart from having a title dripping in geek irony revels in its battle style vocals taking it in to a strange realm occupied by hip hop and the beat poets.

Originally known by the rather more formal We Are The Physics And Therefore Everything We Say Is Fact self belief is clearly not a problem, from haphazard beginnings to the formation of what they label ‘mutant science punk rock’, WATP clearly take life in chunks, not bite-sized pieces.
