Heather Greene - Five Dollar Dresses
Tom Brumpton
Luscious debut outing from "New Yorks Best Kept Secret"
"Simply put, Heather Greene's 'Five Dollar Dresses' is possibly one of the best folk albums of the year, and you need to own it. "
For years now, Heather Greene has been dubbed "New York's Best Kept Secret", playing tiny bars throughout the city, the young singer songwriter has spent the last 8 years proving to anyone with ears not only why she's worth your time and attention, but that she's got the songs and the talent to back it up.
Want further proof? How about the fact that throughout all of 2005, Greene was wined and dined by every major label scumbag, hellbent on making a pretty penny out of the young New Yorker, however she bravely opted to release the CD herself in in 2005. Selling a solid number of copies, she partnered with Wildflower records recently in order to release the disc to the masses.
And what a treat they're in for, from the gentle, warm acoustic guitar intro of 'Just What I Needed', to the latin influenced 'Not Exactly', 'Five Dollar Dresses' stands as an interesting hybrid of vast influences from the smokey Jazz of 'Daybreak', to the aforementioned Latino influence through to the mournful blues of 'Looking Glass', offering a wide pallet of tastes; while not intentional, this luscious opus holds bounty for true lovers of music everywhere.
Even if the pre-mentioned genre's don't float your boat, the album itself is full of rich folk songs, underpinned with Greene's haunting and beautiful voice. With numbers such as the albums title track and the uplifting splendour of 'I Wanna Say Thank You' offering the listener a more basic, if not all the while touching journey into Greene's heavy heart.
There's little about this album that could even be considered unattractive or undesirable, Greene has created an album of delicate and brooding music, that offers the listener an insight into the psyche of an astounding woman with a deep, poetic soul. Simply put, Heather Greene's 'Five Dollar Dresses' is possibly one of the best folk albums of the year, and you need to own it.
