Astpai - Corruption Concealed Under Deceptive Slogans

by Simon T Diplock

Austrian punks deal in weighty issues and wicked riffs

"‘Hard To Manage...’ throws melody and acoustic guitar into the mix, ‘Stuck On Repeat’ is 40 fiery seconds in the finest politi-punk tradition."

Astpai are dealing with some dangerously heavy issues here. Seriously, it’s a surprise the Austrian quartet don’t fall through every stage they take to. For starters just double-check the weight behind the title of this, their second full-length, then look at tracks like ‘Paving Ways In Cliche Suits’ and lyrics like “This one goes out to the majority of global trading companies that reach aims by creating oppressed minorities” too. See, Serious stuff.

It’s not just greedy big businesses that get a going over either. Sexism, false idols, needless wars and even human nature all get a feral, punk-flavoured frown and the bass-powered crunch of ‘Born As Destined…’ puts fascist regimes and racism in the crosshairs as well. However, while Astpai clearly put heart and soul behind every note, you don’t have to be all about militancy, morals and standing up for what you believe in to enjoy ‘Corruption Concealed…’, there’s some pretty damn sweet hardcore punk to appreciate here too.

Opener ‘Lies & Affection’ is a vicious rap against the man but a bouncy, balls-out, intense two-minutes to boot, ‘Hands Kept Clean’ sounds like cult Canadian hardcore heroes Grade, and while ‘Hard To Manage Broken Windows’ throws more melody and some acoustic guitar into the mix, ‘Stuck On Repeat’ is 40 fiery, metallic seconds in the finest politi-punk tradition.

So, whether you first come for the music or the message, there’s plenty to stay for in this particular corner of the punk-rock world.
