Apartment - The Dreamer Evasive

More of a Peckham bedsit than a Park Lane penthouse

"Having already dedicated a song to Boy Kill Boy’s frontman Chris Peck, it seems Apartment are now off on a mission to impersonate BKB too"

It’s that time of year again when record labels can’t really be bothered and the public aren’t really that interested and so all manner of unremarkable music suddenly appears on the market. If it fails to catch the public’s attention then ho hum, if it takes off then every one’s a winner. Apartment, alas, are more likely to slip by the wayside than hit the bright lights.

Having already dedicated a song to Boy Kill Boy’s frontman Chris Peck, it seems Apartment are now off on a mission to impersonate BKB too. ‘The Dreamer Evasive’ is Apartment’s debut album and to be fair there’s not a great deal to get excited about. The aforementioned ‘My Brother Chris’ is lively enough but instantly forgettable. ‘10,000 Times’ is probably the band's catchiest song. Opening with a nice guitar riff and then progressing on to attack politicians and the like; it’s easy to relate to but other than that, there’s not a great deal that can be said about it. ‘Pressures’ rabbits on blandly moaning that “they take cocaine / They take cocaine”, as do about four million other Brits every week but no one else seems to feel the need to yell about it.

It’s difficult not to sound too harsh when appraising this record as there really isn’t a lot to get excited about. The band are undoubtedly competent musicians and David Caggiaris can certainly sing but that’s where any interest ends. Nothing on here is memorable; it’s all been done a thousand times before, only better and at a time when it was original. It’s not good, it’s not bad, it’s quite simply just mediocre. So as apartments go, this is more of a Peckham bedsit than a Park Lane penthouse.
